Chapter Ten

Stay? The word resounded inside my head as I stared at their digs. It wasn’t a palace, I knew that. Just a massive room and a few luxuries. Hell, in the outside world, this could belong to a group of broke-ass backpackers. But in here with the bars on the windows and hate waiting on every corner, it was fucking paradise.

“Want a Dr. Pepper?” Orphic made for the refrigerator.

He yanked it open, revealing rows of sodas. I stared at the three small chocolate bars shoved into the corner and my mouth watered.

Orphic lingered with the door open. “What?” He glanced inside the refrigerator once more. “Don’t like Dr. Pepper? I’ve got Coke, too.”

It wasn’t about the soda. It wasn’t about the beds—or the room. It was about that precipice I stood on. I felt like a kid once more, standing on the end of the footpath while the nice man in front of me held out the biggest bag of candy I’d ever seen while he murmured, “All you gotta do is sit right here next to me. You want to be my friend, right? I like friends. Do you like friends?”

“I’m sorry…I can’t do this.” I turned and made for the doorway.

“Okay.” Acyn closed the door before I could leave.

The snap of a can ring was followed by a hiss. I stilled, staring at the door and the floor in the room. Panic filled me, fluttering like a trapped bird in my chest.

“It’s okay. We get it,” Maxton murmured as he shoved up from the bed. “You’re trapped. We’re all trapped. It’s just some of us have been here a little longer. We’ve had time to accept it.”

Something in my gut clenched with his words. I spun, meeting his gaze as he stalked across the room toward me. “I won’t accept it. I’ll never accept it.”

“Good.” He smiled and held out a hand. But it wasn’t toward me, it was toward Orphic.

The open can of Dr. Pepper was passed from one to the other.

“Then have a goddamn soda, and vent and rage, and make a plan. Like we’ve all made plans,” said Nathair.

There was a twinkle in Orphic’s eyes, and it was that glint of hunger that made me step forward. I held on to that sharpened edge in his eyes, finding an echo of my own rage. “Have you come to accept this?” I murmured.

“What do you think?” Orphic’s top lip curled as he shoved the can toward me.

I took it, clenching my fist around the steel, and lifted it to my lips. It was cold, icy, burning all the way down until it hit the pit of my stomach.

And one more rock on the pile inside me lifted, making me float with the tiny bubbles in my belly. I met his careful smile with one of my own as I gulped and lowered my hand.

“Welcome to the Katalyst Kings,” Maxton purred, his voice filled with hunger as Orphic handed him a can of his own.

The pop and hiss echoed around the room.
